Here’s a shocking statistic for you.

Research by Gallup shows that only 21% of employees globally feel engaged at work.

In other words, almost 4 out of 5 employees spend their working days in a job that doesn’t fulfil them.

As a result, they are underperforming, perhaps even miserable, and have one eye on the exit.

It’s not that they are bad employees; they just can’t flourish.

That’s despite leaders like you doing your best to help your team thrive.

You put people first. You know that happy, engaged team members perform at their best. Teams that thrive are powerful and deliver outstanding results. Yet it’s not happening.

Engagement is mediocre, performance is far from what you know it can be and staff are slipping out of the company like sand through your fingers. You’re not sure why and that’s frustrating. Maybe you even worry that you’re an ineffective leader?

Don’t worry. You aren’t. You’re not failing your team. The system at your company is failing you.

And you’re not alone.

I’ve been there myself, both as a team member and as a team leader. In fact, it’s the whole reason I wrote this book, Thriving Talent.

My story is your story; my solution can also be your solution

Hi, I’m Aoife O’Brien.

I worked in corporate roles for 20 years. My first few jobs were amazing. I worked for hugely successful businesses that invested heavily in the people who worked for them.

I thrived. I thought every company was like that.

Oh, I was so wrong.

My last few corporate roles left me hollow and dejected. My contributions weren’t recognised and I experienced misogyny, empty promises, poor leadership and being passed over for promotion. My confidence was shot and I was struggling to reach my full potential. In short, I was miserable.

And because so much of our identity is wrapped up in our work, my sour work life started to infect my life outside my job too.

How had this happened?

So I left my corporate job to dedicate myself to finding the causes and, more importantly, the solution.

Thriving Talent is the result of my two decades of corporate experience, deep dives into the research (including my own as part of a Master’s degree) and over 200 in-depth conversations with business leaders about all aspects of happy workplaces.

The result of all this grounded and constructive work is the Thriving Talent framework—a practical framework that has been tried and tested in the real world, with resounding success.

It’s the very same framework I’ve used to help numerous blue-chip corporate clients improve employee engagement and boost their results.

And it’s all set out in this book for you.

Become the effective leader you deserve to be

This book is for leaders who aspire to create thriving, human-centred workplaces but who are caught between the competing priorities of hitting targets and keeping a team motivated—between short-term business demands and the long-term goal of building a sustainable, high-performing culture.

The Thriving Talent framework will help you succeed in doing that. Thriving Talent will teach you how you can use the framework to take control and drive employee satisfaction, performance and profitability.

Not only will it lift up your team, it’ll lift the weight from your shoulders and allow you to be the leader you always knew you could be.

You’ll get access to everything I’ve learned and everything I’ve implemented with my corporate clients.

Thriving Talent is the book I wish I had read when I was a leader. It’s also the book I wish my own leaders had read.

You’ll discover how psychological safety underpins three key pillars of a successful workplace: culture, drivers and capabilities. And how your leadership tops it all off and steers success.

Thriving Talent framework

You’ll also get insights from leading researchers and learn from studies you might not otherwise know about, have access to or simply have time to read.

The Thriving Talent framework set out in this book is the key to fulfilling your desire to support your team and help them thrive.

And when they are thriving, you’ll know and understand your part in their success. Even better, you’ll be able to do it again and again. You’ll have become the effective leader you dreamt of.
